R35 Ignition Coils by V.E.
The Velocity Element R35 high output ignition coils are a direct replacement for the OEM R35 coils. Designed for easy installation and available with stock length boots for VR38 GTR applications or extended length boots for use with aftermarket coil on plug conversion like the V.E. DSM / EVO1-3 R35 cop conversion kit. We use these R35 coils on a huge range of engines including 2JZ, RB, EJ25, K24 & SR20 to name just a few. The R35 coils deliver a hot spark and support up to 350HP per cylinder, that’s 1400whp on a 4cyl and 2100whp on a 6cyl.
We highly recommend using NGK BKR series spark plugs with the R35 coils. BKR9eix are the most commonly used plugs and what you can find in our RB26, SR20 and K24/K20 engine builds. Alternative NGK spark plugs to use with the R35 coils that have higher heat ranges are the: BKR8eix & BKR7eix-11

R35 coil dwell time:
The V.E. R35 coils are direct OEM replacements for the R35 GTR ignition coils. When using these coils with an aftermarket ECU the Coil Dwell time should be tuned/adjusted in order to get the hottest, most reliable spark from your R35 coils. Assuming 13.5-14.5 volts we recommend the coil dwell time be set at 2.2ms to start. Raise the dwell time up to 3.5ms as needed to prevent spark blow out. Setting coil dwell time is a balance, the less dwell time the less heat the coil is subjected to which greatly extends coil life.
Here you can see an example of a Brewed Tuned STI running the V.E. R35 coils. The Coil Dwell time table below is a perfect example of how to tune the dwell time for the R35 coils. These same coil dwell times can be used on any modern ECU running the R35 coils as a safe starting point. Of course if you want to have a professional handle the tuning for you we offer a full range of E-tune services for all popular ECU’s.
Those looking for an even hotter, stronger spark should turn to the AEM smart coils or AEM IGN1-a ignition coils. If you plan to run over 50psi of boost on Methanol fuel we recommend using using the AEM smart coils to ensure your engine gets all the spark energy it need.
